Between volcanoes and the beach
A compact western route inspired by the official tourism itinerary. Climb El Salvador's highest volcano, explore Cerro Verde and Lake Coatepeque, then descend toward volcanic reefs and one of the region's most important mangrove landscapes.
Four-day route
Day 1: Santa Ana/Ilamatepec Volcano
Climb El Salvador's highest volcano for views into its crater and across the western volcanic landscape. Use the currently authorized entrance, schedule and guide system; confirm weather and access before leaving.
Show Santa Ana Volcano on our map →Day 2: Cerro Verde and Lake Coatepeque
Walk Cerro Verde's cooler forest trails in the morning, then continue to the blue crater lake for viewpoints, food, boat trips or other water activities from established providers.
Day 3: Los Cóbanos
Explore a coast known for volcanic reefs, diving, seafood and seasonal marine excursions. Book qualified operators and never assume whale, dolphin, fishing or diving conditions are guaranteed.
Show Los Cóbanos on our map →Day 4: Barra de Santiago
Finish beside an extensive mangrove ecosystem and wildlife refuge. Choose a responsible local boat operator, keep distance from wildlife and avoid disturbing nesting or protected areas.

- A car or driver is the easiest way to connect the highlands, lake and coast.
- The official 95-km figure does not include every hotel transfer or optional detour.
- Do not attempt an unscheduled volcano ascent, especially at night; follow current official access rules.
- Confirm marine trips, weather, park hours and road conditions directly before departure.
