Wild East: 5-day itinerary
An eastern route inspired by El Salvador's official tourism itinerary, combining a remote surf beach, a relaxed coastal base, regional city life, volcanic islands and an unforgettable mountaintop view over the Gulf of Fonseca.
Five-day route
Day 1: Punta Mango
Begin at this remote, powerful surf break on the eastern coast. Road conditions and the final approach can vary, so arrange suitable transport and seek local advice before leaving.

Use El Cuco as a relaxed beach base with a long shoreline, local food and access toward nearby surf beaches. It offers more services than the most isolated coastal stops.

Explore eastern El Salvador's principal city for regional food, markets, shopping and nightlife. The famous carnival takes place in November, but event dates and road closures should be confirmed.

Take a small-boat excursion among volcanic islands and fishing communities. Always use an established local operator, wear a life jacket and confirm weather and return time.

Finish high above the gulf with views toward its islands, Honduras and Nicaragua. Access commonly requires advance coordination and a suitable vehicle or authorized transport.

- A rental SUV, driver or organized tour is more practical than public buses for the full route.
- The official 80-km figure should not be treated as your total driving distance; accommodation and transfers add mileage.
- Carry water and cash, download offline maps and avoid arriving at remote places after dark.
- Confirm roads, boat departures, volcano access and surf conditions locally.
