Best surf spots in El Salvador
El Salvador’s Pacific coast is known for long right-hand point breaks, warm water and surf communities close to the capital and international airport. Conditions can be powerful, so select a break that matches your experience and ask local instructors about the day’s swell, tides and entry points.
Surf City: La Libertad coast
Punta Roca
A powerful right point break over rock near the city of La Libertad. It is internationally recognized and best approached by advanced or expert surfers who understand the entry, exit and current conditions.
El Sunzal
A long right-hand wave popular with intermediate surfers. Its reputation does not make every session easy: swell size, crowds and the rocky bottom still require judgment.
El Tunco and El Zonte
These are convenient bases with lodging, restaurants, board rentals and surf instruction. Beginners should book a lesson and let the school choose the safest suitable nearby break.
Wild East surf
Las Flores
A quality right point break close to El Cuco, generally suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. It also works well as a base for exploring the eastern coast.
Punta Mango
A more remote and demanding rocky wave. Arrange transportation and local guidance before visiting; stronger days are intended for experienced surfers.
Surf safety
- Ask a local surf school about tides, swell, currents and rock entry points.
- Do not surf alone at an unfamiliar or remote break.
- Use reef-safe sun protection, hydrate and secure your valuables.
- Confirm transportation before sunset, particularly on the eastern coast.
The wider official Surf City route
El Salvador’s official tourism guide uses “Surf City” for a wider Pacific-coast collection—not only advanced surf breaks. It includes beaches, estuaries, islands and coastal bases suitable for surfing, swimming, nature trips or overnight stays. Conditions and access vary, so confirm locally before entering the water.
