Home of the Right Surf: 5-day itinerary
A coast-to-city route inspired by the official Ministry of Tourism itinerary. It mixes surfing, coastal forest, a mountain viewpoint, city culture and western marine life without requiring a long cross-country drive every day.
Five-day route
Day 1: El Tunco
Begin in this walkable surf community with its emblematic rock, nearby breaks, restaurants and evening atmosphere. New surfers should book a lesson and follow local guidance around rocky entries.

Exchange the beach for trails through a coastal dry-forest reserve near Puerto de La Libertad. Ask the park directly about current access, guides and adventure activities before arriving.

Travel into the Cordillera del Bálsamo for a scenic hike to a rocky viewpoint overlooking green ridges and, in clear weather, the Pacific horizon. Use suitable footwear and avoid exposed sections during storms.

Use the capital for history, food, museums, shopping or nightlife. The Historic Center gives a compact introduction to the National Palace, cathedral, theater and renewed public spaces.

Start with the quieter surf atmosphere of Mizata, then continue west to Los Cóbanos for volcanic reefs, seafood and marine activities. Diving or boat trips require a qualified local operator and suitable conditions.
Transport and timing
- A rental car, driver or prearranged tourist transport makes this multi-stop route much easier.
- Do not treat 98 km as the full driving total; lodging choices, transfers and side trips add distance.
- Leave early for hiking, surfing and marine activities, which depend on weather and local conditions.
- Confirm park access, surf lessons, guides and boat or dive reservations directly.
